The three steps in getting ready for a wildfire are: 1.) PLAN 2.) KNOW and 3.) ACT

     a.  Explain to your blog readers why is there an infestation of bark beetles?
There is an infestation of bark beetles because of how many dead and dying trees there are in California, making it a great place for these insects to find food and shelter.

     b.  Inform your readers of the signs of bark beetle infestation?  
    Trees react to Bark Beetles in a similar way to most injuries that they sustain: by releasing pitch, it will be evident by leaving small white or reddish-brown pitch tubes on the outside of the bark.
A white pitch tube means the tree deterred the Bark Beetles, and the reddish-brown tubes mean the Bark Beetle was successful in attacking the tree.
Frass (a sawdust like substance) is also a sign that Bark beetles are in a tree, it will be on the bark and in piles at the base of the trunk as the beetles and larvae bore through the bark.
Another way to tell is if the trees leaves or needles are turning reddish-brown when the trees around them are green or if they would normally be green at that time of year.
 c.  Educate your readers on what homeowners and land managers can do to manage the bark beetle infestation?
Thinning the trees on your property can help, as it makes it harder for wildfire to move through and also Bark Beetles usually attack weaker trees.
Not much can be done once a tree is already infested with beetles, but if there are only limbs that are infested, then they should be pruned and disposed of immediately, same goes with whole trees that are under attack, because this lessens the chance of them moving to other trees.
Since it's usually only weak trees that are attacked by Bark Beetles, keeping the trees and shrubs on your property healthy is crucial as well.

Embers from a wildfire can travel over a mile and can travel for days before starting additional fires.

Given this information, it's very important to clear away dead trees and brush from at least 100 feet around your house and belongings.

My Favorite Place in Nature

It's really hard to decide what my favorite place in nature would be, but if it really came down to it, it would have to be a tie between a redwood forest and the Mendonoma coast. I chose a redwood forest because that's where I grew up, and every time I'm in one I instantly feel more calm and at peace, hearing the sounds of nature soothes me and helps me feel more connected to the world as a whole; not to mention how beautiful it is. The towering trees also make me feel small in a good way, forcing me to think of the hundreds of years they've existed and how trivial everyday life can be in comparison to so much time passed.
